Basic Information About the Village

OLCHOWIEC

Olchowiec is situated near the border with Slovakia, in the southern part of the Podkarpackie Voivodeship, within Krosno County. It is located 98 km from Rzeszów (the region's capital) and 35 km from Krosno (the county center). Geographically, Olchowiec lies in the valley of the Olchowczyk stream, bordering the Magura National Park and the Jaśliski Landscape Park.

The first record of the village—stating that it belonged to the Stadnicki family—appeared in 1581. However, documents were recently discovered from 1543, where the head of the village (sołtys) of Olchowiec was mentioned as a witness in a lawsuit regarding the lease of the town of Żmigród. Consequently, the village is now approximately 500 years old. In 1880, it was inhabited by about 400 residents. In 1944, nearly two-thirds of the inhabitants were deported to the Soviet Union. Only 27 families remained, and after further displacement to Poland's Western Territories, only 18 families were left. Olchowiec was rebuilt with great difficulty after the battles for the Dukla Pass (1944–1945) and subsequent events: deportations to Ukraine and the "Recovered Territories"Operation Vistula (Akcja Wisła).The village shrank to only 15% of its 1939 population. In 1965, a gravel access road was built, and in 1972, an electrical power line was connected. The school in Olchowiec operated from 1841 to 1985. Currently, children attend primary school in Dukla, located 14 kilometers away from Olchowiec.

The number of inhabitants in 2014 was 68 people.

Liczba mieszkańców na rok 2020 wynosiła 52 osób

Additionally, the village contains several summer houses that are inhabited only during the summer season.
